TEMPO.CO, Medan – The UNESCO international conference will be held in Paris in April 2020. One of the agendas is to announce Lake Toba as a member of the UNESCO Global Geopark (UGG).
In the opinion of the President Director of the Lake Toba Tourism Authority Agency (BOPDT), Arie Prasetyo, this status will boost foreign tourist visits and advance the tourism industry in the country.
“Still on track, the date of the announcement is uncertain. But, in April 2020 Lake Toba will be determined to be a member of the UNESCO Global Geopark, “Arie told TEMPO at his office on Wednesday, March 4, 2020.
But it takes a long time to be recognized, nine years of waiting, since it was first proposed to UNESCO in 2011. The new agreement was recognized by UGG at the The 6th Asia Pacific Geoprak Network (APGN) Symposium which was held in Rinjani, Lombok on September 1, 2019.
The Toba Caldera Geopark will provide the benefits of independence, competitiveness and prosperity to the community and surrounding areas that are part of the Lake Toba Geopark. Many international institutions and investors will come to educate and develop Lake Toba tourism.
“There are 16 geosites that we proposed at that time, already coordinating
with the North Sumatra Provincial Government to focus on its development. So Lake Toba will grow more, “he said.
The 16 geosites are: Sipisopiso-Tongging in Karo District and Silalahi-Sabungan in Dairi District. Haranggaol and Sibaganding in Simalungun Regency. In Tobasamosir Regency there are Eden Gardens, Batu Basiha-TB Silalahi-Balige, and Situmurun. Then, Hutaginjang and Muara Sibandang in North Tapanuli Regency.
