Some time ago, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) announced that he would designate 8 airports in Indonesia as airports that have the potential to become international hubs. Two of them are Soekarno Hatta International Airport and Kualanamu International Airport.
So, what’s his readiness like so far?
President Director of PT Angkasa Pura II Muhammad Awaluddin said, the two airports under the management of the company in principle are ready enough to become international hubs.
“For Kualanamu and Soekarno Hatta International Airports in general and in principle very ready and feasible to be a hub airport,” Muhammad Awaluddin told detikcom in a special interview, Friday (28/8).
Especially for Soekarno Hatta International Airport, in terms of location, runway readiness, capacity and other criteria already qualified mainly to be an international hub.
“For Soekarno Hatta International Airport is very ready because Soekarno Hatta International Airport is currently supported by 3 terminals with a very large capacity and 3 runways for Soekarno Hatta International Airport is very ready and worthy to be an international hub and it has been running for many years,” he said.
For capacity moreover, coupled with the plan to build Terminal 4 further makes the airport ready to accommodate more passengers.
“Although Soekarno Hatta International Airport is not a tourism hub or a tourism hub flight but rather a business flight and traveling people. Soekarno Hatta International Airport is also ready to accommodate any traffic, meaning that the traffic is as big as anything, Soekarno Hatta is very ready because, soon we will also build Terminal 4 and so on, so that later in the movement of air transport traffic both passenger traffic movement and special aircraft traffic for at Soekarno Hatta International Airport is no longer an issue,” he said.
Similarly, Kualanamu International Airport, in terms of location, the readiness of the runway and facilities at the airport airside is also confirmed to be quite ready. However, it still needs to increase capacity. Currently, the airport is only able to accommodate a maximum capacity of 9 million passengers.
“Kualanamu International Airport is now for the air side there are no issues because in capacity and facilities on the airside of Kualanamu International Airport it is enough 1 runway that is long enough with good facilities it is still able to face for movement on the air side. It is only necessary to increase capacity on the terminal side because the maximum traffic that has occurred at Kualanamu International Airport is that in 2018 it is close to 11 million passenger movements while the terminal capacity at Kualanamu International Airport is only about 8 to a maximum of 9 million,” he said.
